Bra, Panty and Slip Sets
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
A very elegant lingerie combination is a bra, panty and slip set. Once a common gift at a bridal shower, they are considerably less common now because women no longer wear slips on a daily basis. However, most of the high-end lingerie shops might, at least occasionally, have the sets available. If you can’t find one that meets your expectations, you can always try vintage lingerie sellers. You may be surprised at how many sets have survived, despite being well worn.
Classic Bra, Panty and Slip Sets
For most of the twentieth century, when a woman went out on the town, she wore a slip under her suit or dress. It could either be a half or a full slip, but it was an integral part of the outfit. And since she was also wearing a bra and panties, particularly from the 1930s on, it only made sense that lingerie manufacturers design full sets, both cheap and high-end.
Of course, a woman could pair a plain white or black bra and panty with a plain slip, but sets traditionally have matching design elements, such as lace, appliqué or embroidery. In the 1960s, you might have seen floral fabrics used to make the sets, often with lace trim around the panty legs and slip bottoms.
The idea of a set fell out of favor as women began to want more practical lingerie. When styles and fabrics changed and women weren’t wearing slips every day, they only wanted one or two slips in their wardrobe and didn’t care if they matched the rest of their lingerie or not. Good slips are harder to find than ever now, although adorable bra and panty sets are everywhere.
Vintage Bra, Panty and Slip Sets
Very few vintage panties survive, for obvious reasons, and even after washing, you may not want to wear them. What does survive, however, are tap pants, which you can wear over modern panties. Tap pants usually have lace insets and came with full slips that featured matching insets. The matching bras might have a lace overlay in the same pattern.
Start your search with some of the better online vintage lingerie shops. Heavenly Vintage Lingerie has a well laid out site divided by bras, panties, half slips and full slips. If you can’t find an exact set, you may be able to find items that match well enough to pass for a set. Quality lingerie, whether vintage or modern, will always go together. However, because there will usually be detail work on a vintage piece, it is easier to find something that will match. The quality of the fabric used in vintage lingerie also means that you can get relatively plain pieces and put them together to look like a purpose-designed set.
Another option is to focus solely on half or full slips that might bear some resemblance to a modern bra and panty set. Again, because vintage slips usually have detail work, you might be pleasantly surprised by how easy it can be to find something that works well with your newly bought goods.
Other good vintage sources include:
- Pink Girl Vintage Lingerie
- Dollhouse Bettie, which is particularly good in that they have some new retro styles as well.
- Dandelion Vintage
- Vintage Slips, which is one of the best because they specialize in slips and also carry bras and panties.
With any of these shops, you can contact them and ask about the possibilities of sets. Many places will let an interested customer know when they acquire something that might be what they are looking for. Some stores may also be able to make you a custom order, or put you in contact with someone who can. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to find bra, panty and slip sets anymore, but if you’re willing to be flexible, you might end up satisfied.
