Bra Strap Cushion
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
A bra strap cushion is an inexpensive and simple way to achieve more comfort and prevent slippage. Many different brands are available and users report varying degrees of pros and cons. If you need one, it's best to do some research and find the cushion that works best for you.
How a Bra Strap Cushion Works
Although it should not be the case, even a well-fitting bra can sometimes have uncomfortable shoulder straps. Many plus-sized women find that, especially if they choose a less expensive bra, they have to contend with straps that dig into their shoulders. This can cause grooves, itching and sometimes even headaches. If it persists, it can become chronic. A strap cushion, most often made of silicone but sometimes fabric, slides under the strap and creates a smooth, comfortable surface. The bra strap will neither slip nor dig into your shoulder. The cushions tend to come in either clear or skin-tone colors, thus blending in and being unnoticeable under clothes.
Some Cushion Problems
Although the bra strap cushions can work well, they are not the most perfect option for everyone. Many women are frustrated to find that the fabric cushions, while comfortable and cushioning, still allow the bra strap to slip. But others find that the silicone can be irritating, especially in warm weather. They have to put either tissue or baby powder on their shoulders first before using the cushions, making for a more cumbersome process.
Other people find that, when the strap is in place, the edges of the cushion stick up under clothes, which they are not supposed to do. Even the more expensive varieties can be prone to this.
Ultimately, what's frustrating is the need for the cushions in the first place. A full-figured woman can have a hard time finding a bra that fits and yet is sexy, pretty or fun. Where larger bras do exist that are attractive, they are often very expensive. Adding even more frustration is that a full-figured woman is more likely to need to replace her bras more frequently than a smaller woman, so it's an expense that needs to be laid out on a regular basis. When a woman can find a bra that fits her needs and is attractive, but doesn't have the wide and well-constructed strap that maintains comfort and support, it seems a worthwhile investment to purchase a pair of cushions and ultimately save some money.
Choices in Cushions
Also called bra strap pads, there are a number available and they can be found in any well-stocked lingerie store, as well as online. It can be useful when first buying a pair to purchase them at a brick-and-mortar store where the sales assistants are knowledgeable. They can help you choose a pair that will work for you and advise you on placement. But even before you get to the cushions, they may be able to help you with fitting a bra that should preclude the need for cushions altogether. It's certainly worth a try.
A few options in cushions include:
- Braza Cush-eez
- Braza Strap Keepers
- Kathleen Kirkwood Flower Power Girlie-Girl Bra Strap Cushions
- Camp Comfy Straps
- Nearly Me Silicone Shoulder Strap Pad
And a host of others, including some you can find on sites selling medical equipment for home use. No one cushion gets uniform rave reviews, and some are considered pretty terrible. Try to find some that have a lot of reviews, preferably on sites that sell lingerie exclusively, so that you can make a more informed decision.
If nothing looks satisfying, you might just try making your own cushions. They may only be minimally effective, but at least you've saved money and created something unique.
