Lingerie. The word itself causes men's eyes to glaze over and women to pull out their credit cards. Underwear has never been as hot an item as it is now. Owning a sexy thong or a practical pair of boy shorts is a fashion statement, and there are a plethora of colors, styles, and fits of lingerie for every woman on the planet. Take a walk around a busy shopping street in any large town. What do you see? Mannequins in bras and panties staring back at you. Billboards the size of houses with nearly nude women. Lingerie constantly pushes the limits of what the public deems acceptable. But there's no denying it: underwear is everywhere.
The Word, The Garment
The term lingerie wass first found in the English language in 1835. It was taken from the Old French word "linge", itself derived from the Latin word meaning "(made) of linen". The term entered widespread use in the mid-1800's as a euphemism for under-linens, a topic never discussed in public or private life.
Women's underwear began as shape-forming garments that enhanced (or brutally altered) her body's appearance. As time and fashion trends advanced, lingerie evolved into practical garments for everyday use and sexy attire to seduce. Learn more about the history of lingerie.
