As a rule, corsets have always been worn as undergarments -- women's lingerie that goes underneath a dress, blouse or other top. But times have changed, as have corsets. No longer are they necessarily worn to give you an "hourglass" figure or push in what Mother Nature has left hanging out. Our great-grandmothers and their great-grandmothers can attest to this. Of course, these generations of ladies were also covered from head-to-toe in clothing, and it was considered scandalous to show more skin than what was necessary.
Corsets: A History Lesson
Corsets were invented in the 16th century by Catherine de Médicis, the wife of King Henri II of France. At that time, she put a ban on "thick waists" during public appearances. For the next 350 years or so, women tortured themselves with corsets made from whalebones and steel rods. In the early 1900s, that style of corset went by the wayside to make room for the invention of the modern-day brassiere and girdle.
Today's Corsets
Along with other styles of lingerie, corsets have really transformed the way women shop for and wear clothing. Besides being comfortable to wear, corsets show off a women's assets without torturing her body or causing the medical issues that came with wearing them generations ago. Today's corsets come in:
