Cotton Flannel Nightgowns
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Cotton flannel nightgowns have a bad reputation in the lingerie world, but they don't have to live up to all of the negative hype. They can actually be quite cute (though probably still not sensual or erotic!) in addition to being possibly the warmest thing you can lounge around in as well as sleep in on those coldest winter nights.
Function Over Fashion
Part of the negativity surrounding cotton flannel nightgowns is their lack of sensuality, sophistication, allure, and so on. They're not exactly known as a "come-hither" item in lingerie and are often the subject of jokes about turning lovers off. They are meant for function over fashion, but that doesn’t mean that they have to live up to the attached stigma. You can look cute in them. Just skip the long, shapeless nightgowns featuring large, dark plaid prints.
If your main goal in sleepwear is warmth and coziness, try to find the longer styles in dark colors. Darker colors tend to make us feel cozier while the additional length of the nightgown will keep your legs warm.
What to Look For
So what can you look for to avoid the stigma attached to flannel gowns so that you can stay warm without seeing your lover cringe when you walk out of the bedroom in it? Well, first, skip the bunny slippers and thick green facial mask. Those will take even the cutest cotton flannel piece right back down to the levels of the traditionally unappealing long, dark, plaid nightgowns.
- A shorter length: Sure, you may be a little chillier than you would've been in an floor-length gown, but it's still warmer than a nightie. Showing a little skin in your flannel nightgown will improve the overall image.
- Lighter colors: While teddies and bra and panty sets can still look appealing in dark colors, lighter, more innocent tones play best with flannel nightgowns.
- Details: If you can find a nightgown with a bit more shape than the traditional long, loose styles, these are instantly more intriguing to look at, as they'll hug your body and show off your shape beneath the fabric.
Of course, if tradition calls to you and you'd love a classic flannel nightgown, cozy up to dark plaids in red, blue, and green. Look for ankle-length styles. You may want to balance the flannel with satin or silk sheets, though, to make it easier to move around once you get ready to go to bed.
Buying Cotton Flannel Nightgowns
If you can't find the exact style you have in mind that borders on cute at your local department store, there are online stores to check out:
- Wittman Textiles: Here, you'll find everything from short white nightgowns featuring kitten print, to the more traditional long, red plaid styles. If you're looking to optimize the sensuality in your nightgown purchase despite your craving for the warmth that flannel provides, check out the 36" Pink Kitty Cat Flannel Nightgown. Just want the warmth from head to toe and lust after the most traditional type of flannel nightgown there is? Try the 52" Tartan Flannel Nightgown.
- Vermont Country Store: This store leans toward the more traditional designs of flannel nightgowns, but they're not at all dark and dreary. Even the Lanz Tyrolean Print Nightgown, available in the traditional red or pastel, has eyelet trim at the neck, cuffs, and yoke. This type of detailing can make a big difference in a long nightgown.
There is also the intriguing Snow White Flannel Gown, which is advertised as, "So comfortable you could sleep for 100 years." It's all white and has lace, embroidery, and pin tucking for shape and visual interest.
- L.L. Bean: This site has two flannel gowns that are almost at opposite extremes. There's the Vintage Flannel Nightgown, which is long and red. Then there is the Candy Hearts Flannel Nightshirt that comes in white or pink and is considerably shorter.
The Bottom Line
While cotton flannel nightgowns are not the sexiest thing you could put on to lounge around or sleep in, there are ways around the stigma where you can still find the warmth and comfort that they offer. Try lighter colors, detailing, and showing a little more skin than the traditional styles usually allow.
