Cotton Sports Bras
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Whether for high impact activities or low, cotton sports bras are a sought-after garment for maximum comfort. You are unlikely to find a bra that is a hundred percent cotton, and organic cotton is even harder to find, but you can definitely end up with a bra that works for you.
Considerations With Cotton Sports Bras
Most good sports bras made by quality designers such as Champion and Nike boast at least some cotton content. Cotton is an ideal fabric for a sports bra because it is soft, comfortable, pliable and absorbent. In and of itself, however, it is not really a moisture-wicking fabric, which is why most sports bras, especially those used for high impact activities, will combine any number of polyester blends that act in this capacity. Ironically, a bra made of organic silk or wool would be a more effective moisture-wicker, but likely not as light or inexpensive.
If you're trying to avoid too many man-made fabrics and chemicals, look for a sports bra that at least combines organic cotton. Bear in mind that what you're really buying the bra for is its supportive and performance capacity a few hours a week, so this should be the top consideration when shopping.
Be sure to read customer reviews when possible, and consult with a knowledgeable sports person and sales associate before you purchase. There are those who have found that too much cotton in a sports bra can actually be counter-productive, as it can end up holding the sweat and thus weighing you down. As popular as Champion's Double Dry Cotton Blend bra is, runners avoid it because it absorbs and retains sweat.
Shopping for Bras
When looking for a cotton sports bra, try and confine your shopping to sources that are geared towards active women with specific needs. One of the best online shops for women is Title Nine. As you can guess from the name, they are devoted to providing the best sportswear for women in any activity and will offer sound advice to help you choose.
One of their top-selling bras is the Frog Bra, which is 45 percent cotton, 32 percent Lycra and 23 percent nylon. This bra is especially popular with large-breasted women. Although it is a "masher," the stretch woven cotton allows the bra to control movement – a major consideration for a D cup.
However, most of their bras are made of microfiber and other such wicking fabrics. One of the other few that are made of cotton is a supportive nursing bra that can be worn for low-impact activities. They call it the Best Nursing Bra Ever with double layer cups of pima cotton blended with 20 percent Lycra.
It should also be noted that Enell, the sports bra that is considered one of the very best, especially for larger breasted women, is comprised of nylon and Lycra.
Old Favorites
Although not as sought after as it once was, Jockey is still a well-considered brand and they make a stretch cotton sports bra designed for medium to high-impact use. They claim it wicks away moisture and the two-row hook closure allows you some customization for fit. The content is 92 percent cotton, with polyester and Spandex comprising the remainder.
Going Organic
For about the same amount of money as a brand-name bra, you can get an organic cotton bra from Rawganique. It still adds 9 percent Lycra for stretch and support, as well as that close fit so crucial to a quality sports bra.
You can also get an organic cotton bra at EcoBodywear, which combines 90 percent organic cotton and 10 percent Spandex. It has cross-back straps for maximum flexibility and is light and soft. They do note that there will be some shrinkage after a first wash.
