Determining Bra Size
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Determining bra size is not an exact science, but there are guidelines to follow that will provide you with a proper fitting bra. Once you determine your bra size, you are ready to purchase a figure-flattering bra.
Steps to Determining Bra Size
In order to get started you will need measuring tape and, if you are not shy, a good friend to assist you. It is best to get measured while wearing your most comfortable unpadded bra. You will need to take two measurements to find your correct size:
- Band size is determined by measuring under your arms and across the top of your chest. This measurement should be an even number. If it is an odd number then add an inch to make it even. For example if you are measuring 33 inches add an inch to make it 34 inches. This is your band size.
- The next measurement you will need is your cup size. Cup size is calculated by measuring the fullest part of your breast and subtracting the band size measurement from this measurement. Every inch represents a cup size. For example, if you measure 44 and your band size is 42, you will use two inches as your cup size, which equals a B cup. The best way to figure out your cup size is to consult a cup size chart. The chart will show you what your cup size should be. The following measurements are for cup size: ½ inch = AA, 1 inch = A, 2 inches = B, 3 inches = C, 4 inches = D and so on.
Once you get both your band and cup measurements, you have the information needed to figure out what size bra size you should wear. If your band is a 36 and your cup is a C then you will be a 36 C.
Consult an Expert
If you feel uncomfortable about measuring your bra size at home, you can always find a bra-fitting location where an expert bra-fitter is on staff to measure you. Most large department stores and lingerie boutiques have trained staff that will measure customers and assist them in determining bra size. An expert will measure you to determine what size you are by taking measurements from the top of your bust line, around the middle of the bust line and around your ribcage at the bottom bust line. Not only will they get a proper size for you but they can also recommend the most flattering styles for your particular size and shape.
Why Proper Bra Size is Important
It has been shown that over 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. It is important to wear a bra that fits properly for several reasons including:
- Comfort
- Support
- To create a smooth foundation under your clothing
A properly fitting bra not only looks good but feels good as well. There should be no digging or pinching of your skin. A good fitting bra will not have spillage from being tight or wrinkles from being big. Remember that bra size can vary from brand to brand so it is important to try on your bra before purchasing. If the bra doesn't feel comfortable try on the next size or a different style until you find one that fits properly. Also keep in mind that bras stretch over time and that a woman's body can change as well. It is recommended that you re-evaluate your bras every six months to make sure that they are still fitting properly and do not need to be replaced.
