Exotic Fishnet Stockings
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
In some ways, the notion of exotic fishnet stockings is a tautology, because fishnets are already pretty exotic. However, the basic mesh weave can be made even more alluring with some small variants. And of course, a lot of attitude.
What Makes Exotic Fishnet Stockings?
Fishnet stockings are already exotic because they are so inherently sexy. The tease of a leg that is covered and yet not was part of what made them so appealing in 19th century burlesque shows and still makes them exciting today. Additionally, the mesh gives the curve of the leg more enhancement, so that in fact you do appear that much sexier.
Exotic fishnet stockings can be as simple as a change in color. Fishnets are traditionally black, which is the most slimming and shaping color the leg can wear, but fire-engine red or hot pink fishnets can send a whole different message. You can even get white fishnets if you want to add a touch of exotic to wedding lingerie.
Seams can also make for exotic stockings. All stockings were once seamed because of the way they were constructed, but many stockings can now be found with seams because they are so sexy – they tease the eye as it imagines the seam running up the leg. Seams and lace tops make an even sexier combination.
The weave itself can be changed, with the standard squares becoming more open or having different shapes to excite the senses. Of course, the more open the weave, the more likely the stockings will snag or tear that much sooner, but they should at least last one night.
Exoticism in Color
Although the black mesh over bare skin was traditionally an enormous tease, you can liven up the look by wearing some contrasting color underneath the fishnets. Women found this first in the 1920s when skirts became shorter. All stockings could now be more exotic – even downright artistic. But standards still had to be upheld, and a woman could not show bare skin. If a more open weave stocking was desired, another stocking had to be worn underneath. At that time, it would be a black or beige stocking, but to achieve the same dramatic heft today, a woman will choose a stocking in a more vibrant color. Red or pink under black is usually the most appealing. And if you don't want to wear two pairs of stockings, you can get some ready-made this way. At the Stocking Store, they sell thigh-high exotic fishnet stockings in a more open weave that's called a fence net (because it looks like a chain-link fence) over a pink background.
Wearing Fishnet Stockings
One problem with fishnet stockings is that, although the more open weave is sexy, it can also make the stockings themselves more awkward to wear. Because there is less fabric, they are naturally weaker and will move around on your legs – very embarrassing if they are seamed! You can control this in part by using a really well made garter belt. Better garter belts are designed to sit at or just below your waist and not pull. They will often have six straps instead of just four and be sturdier, keeping the stockings in position. If you have ever seen vintage garter belts, you understand how it was that women were able to wear stockings all day long without having to constantly readjust (although some adjustment was necessary here and there – it wasn't perfect). A better belt will help you out a lot.
Stocking Shopping
Very few fishnet stockings are built to last. Even the more expensive stockings will snag and tear before too long. You can get them in lingerie shops or even costume shops and they'll be about the same quality. This is one instance where you should just look for inexpensive stockings whose look you like, and trust that you'll enjoy them for as long as you have them.
