First bra shopping stories can range from the poignant and touching to the amusing and disastrous. Many women remember shopping for that first bra with their mothers. Young girls often experience some anxiety about their developing bodies and may feel embarrassed about this rite of passage. Still others are excited to finally enter the realm of womanhood, especially those who were late bloomers and were still wearing undershirts while all the other girls around them were wearing bras. You may hear about different bra shopping experiences from your friends or relatives. Every woman has a story to tell about when she got her first bra. Typically, a first bra is a training, or starter, bra.
While some mothers instinctively realize that their daughters may feel shy about expressing the need or desire for a bra, not all girls have a mom to look up to. In some cases, Dad or another relative or family friend may fill the role that moms usually do.
If you get together with your girlfriends and the topic turns to breasts and lingerie, there's a good chance someone will chime in with her first bra shopping experience, which in turn will lead others to follow suit and reveal how that shopping trip went. You can also find various tales at forums frequented by women. Just having to face the reality of shopping for a bra with your daughter can make you remember your own first bra experience. Different women will have different stories, whether they're poignant, funny or a combination.
Amusing
If you fondly remember shopping for your first bra with a big smile on your face, you may have had an enjoyable time. Maybe your mom brought you a bra with B-cups when you were clearly an AA-cup and the bra was way too big for you. Or perhaps you went shopping with Dad and he had no clue what to do in the lingerie department. He may have been more embarrassed than you were. Embarrassing
Some women have related stories of having to shop for their first bras with their brothers in tow. It doesn't matter whether their brother is older or younger than them; brothers can mercilessly tease their sisters about anything.
Other girls get embarrassed when their mothers tell the sales clerks "She doesn't really have anything on top, but she feels she needs a bra." If you're already feeling shy about this purchase, having your mom tell "the world" about it can make you want to crawl into a hole.

It's not easy to do, so don't feel let down if the experience isn't "perfect." It's always nice when moms can recognize their daughters' need or desire for a bra and broach the subject in a casual way. Mom and daughter can have a conversation about what the girl wants and then they can shop together without brothers. If Mom can plan some time and make it into a girls' day out, where the two of them can eat and shop together, it can be a wonderful experience for both. Getting a girl's input on what she likes can make her happier with the purchase.
Growing Up
If you have a daughter or you're raising a young girl, helping her get through this rite of passage can seem daunting. After all, you don't want to scar her for life. Fortunately, even the most embarrassing stories have happy endings.
