Free Lingerie Sewing Patterns
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
For many decades, free lingerie sewing patterns were included as a matter of course in sewing magazines and catalogs. Even the fashion sections of newspapers would advertise a garment and print a small pattern beside it. Today, very few women sew their own clothes, much less lingerie. However, the Internet has opened a wealth of information and goodies, including free patterns.
Searching for Free Lingerie Sewing Patterns
The trouble with the sort of patterns that used to be provided for free is that magazines and catalogs are ephemera, so the bulk of them were thrown away. Of course, you can find them for sale at vintage shops and online, but that defeats the purpose when you want something for free. Fortunately, some good souls who want to get people sewing generously post patterns online. The quality varies greatly, of course, but you can’t argue with the price.
When looking for lingerie sewing patterns, it helps to be specific. Obviously, most people are not going to sew a bra, although if you’re very experienced, it can be a great way to get something you love and save a ton of money. Likewise, a lot of lingerie is difficult to sew by hand because the fabric is flimsy and delicate and requires an industrial machine or a lot more patience than most people have.
So if you want to make a vintage full slip, say, or a peignoir set, or even a nightie, you should look for that, rather than simply “lingerie.” It will save a lot of time in the end. Be aware that there still aren’t as many choices available as you might like. There are loads of patterns for knitting or crocheting camisoles and boy shorts, but such patterns are much easier to print online and the items can be easier to knit than sew, depending upon your level of experience and equipment.
Choices in Free Lingerie Sewing Patterns
So what’s out there? Well, under the “Wedding” section at Free Needle, there are three sets of instructions for making a bridal garter, including one made of lace. These aren’t patterns that you measure against the fabric and then cut, but simply detailed instructions for making what really is a pretty simple piece of lingerie. It makes for a great gift from the maid of honor.
At Free Patterns, which has a wide selection of other accessories, you can only get sewing patterns for aprons, which you could certainly adapt to be a piece of lingerie, rather than kitchen wear. If you want something more distinctly underwear, you’ll have to take up knitting or crochet, in which case they’ve got a lot more to choose from. There’s also a forum, so if you’re looking for something specific, you can ask the community for help.
Other Options
While free lingerie sewing patterns are not easy to find, general good information on sewing is. Blogs are a great way to get patterns, tips and answers. The blog 1st Step to Sewing Success, for instance, in addition to giving tips and providing a host of great links, lets you sign up for free projects. Those projects will be delivered straight to your email.
You can also get free online lessons from many sites, including: *Sewing Lessons
Make Your Own Patterns
Any of the above sites, and many others, will have some basic instructions for making your own pattern. This can be easily done using an item of clothing that you know fits. If you have a vintage slip that is falling apart, as so many are, and want to remake it, this is the ideal way to go, rather than searching for a pattern that you think will work. And once you’ve made that pattern, you can use it again and again!.
