Furry Pajamas

From LoveToKnow Lingerie

Because the idea of soft and furry pajamas is so cute, you'd think the sleepers would be impossible to avoid every winter. Instead, they are almost impossible to find. You can get fuzzy pajamas, or pajamas in a novelty animal print, but if you're looking for something that has more of a fur feeling, you'll have to make them yourself.

If you can't find the exact furry sleepers you want, try making them yourself.

The Look of Furry Pajamas

Generally speaking, people looking for furry pajamas aren't interested in sleeping in clothes made of actual fur. Nor would this be healthy. When it comes to the ideal sleeping garments made from animal products, organic wool and silk are the watchwords.

However, the idea of sleeping in a furry animal print sleeper is enchanting, often at any age. If you want something in a soft, truly fur-like garment, that doesn't exist, but you can find animal sleepers in warm polar fleece.

Fuzzy and Footed

If what you want is to look like a furry animal, why not go a few steps further? You can find footed pajamas for adults and children – even matching family pajamas – that even come with ears so that, should you wish, they can double as a Halloween costume.

At Snug As a Bug, a maker of a lot of novelty pajamas for the whole family, you can get teddy bear pajamas in either pale or chocolate brown. They are made of lightweight polar fleece and zip all the way down the front for an easy on and off. The bottoms are in a patented Sticky Feet and guaranteed not to slip. In fact, they are guaranteed to remain non-skid for a year. They can be washed in the machine. You can personalize them and also get either round or pointy ears to match.

If you want something even more wild, you can opt for the leopard or zebra sleepers. Again, these are both made of polar fleece and zip up the front. The zippers are nylon, thus protecting skin from any cold or potentially sharp metal. Ears are optional.

Your Unique Animal

There are pajama-making companies that will custom-make a sleep set for you in any fabric you like, but if you're looking for a particular kind of furry pajamas for either children or adults and can't find them, you should consider making them yourself. Even for an inexperienced sewer, pajamas can be fairly easy to make and it doesn't matter if they are not perfect because they are only seen indoors. That said, working with fabric that has a nap, as a fur fabric does, requires a touch more ability and a special needle. You can usually find someone to help at a neighborhood fabric shop – they can even do tricky finishing bits like putting in a zipper.

All the best pattern companies have patterns for toddlers' sleepers and while they don't necessarily have them for adults, you can use animal Halloween costume patterns instead. Most patterns can also be found online either for free or at low cost.

It's always best to make a mock-up of the garment in muslin first, even for a non-fitted piece like pajamas. It gives you a sense of what you need to do when you begin working with the fur. For cutting furry fabric, you need very sharp scissors or even a razor, so children should not assist. When you buy the fur, consult with an assistant at the shop as to the best thread, explaining that this is for sleepwear, not a costume. You will need something heavy duty.

Tempting though it may be, do try and resist adding a tail to the pajamas. While it's adorable on a costume, it's just going to be uncomfortable for sleeping.
