Interview with Carol Barge, Creator of
myLACYS

All women, at some point in their lives, experience moisture issues "down there" that they want to protect their clothes from, but they may not want to deal with disposable panty liners, either. Carol Barge has created the answer: myLACYS™ panties (available in a wide range of sizes: XS-2X).

Where did you get the idea for myLACYS?™

Let’s just say, “necessity is the mother of invention.” Like many women, I found myself gradually, over time, using a daily disposable panty liner to “be safe” and protect my clothing from a variety of moisture issues that all healthy women experience at one time or another. I found the daily disposable liners to be an inconvenience, and it really bothered me that all those liners were bound for the landfill. I searched for a product like this, and found nothing on the market for active, fashionable women who want a stylish panty with this added benefit, so I decided to design and manufacture myLACYS™ to fill that niche.

How long has the company been around? What's your success story?

I started the company in 2004 and spent several years working on prototypes, laboratory testing of various materials, and field studies to gather product and marketing information from potential customers.

Success can be defined on many levels, but I first really felt it with myLACYS™ when I started hearing from my customers how the product was making a positive difference in their lives. One story after another was shared about how myLACYS™ boosted confidence and helped women to feel on top of their game. Many have said that myLACYS™ are their favorite underwear because the product gives them peace of mind, and allows them to feel confident in their appearance, no matter what slight moisture issue they may contend with.

How do these panties work?

• Wickable High Tech Fabric:

You'll be kept dry and comfortable because of the high-tech, antimicrobial fabric that makes up each entire pair of underwear. It's what helps keep you dry and comfortable when it comes to perspiration when you exercise, vaginal discharge, the unexpected onset of a period or really heavy periods, small leaks when you cough, laugh or jump, hot flashes, or any of a myriad of unwanted moisture issues. You will stay dry and comfortable.

• Highly Absorbent Washable Inner Pad: What does the majority of the work (and works even more efficiently after repeated washings) is the thin, invisible pad sewn into the inner crotch piece of the underwear. It's double layered and antimicrobial--and very absorbent.

• Nanotechnology Moisture Barrier Application: On the other side of the pad, next to your clothing, is a moisture barrier application. It won't wash out, and you can't tell it's there. The moisture barrier utilizes nanotechnology by bonding to the fibers of the fabric, and prevents leaks.

These are great because they keep your outerwear from staining, but how do you clean them?

Wash them in the permanent press cycle in warm soapy water and tumble dry low in the dryer. If they are stained, use a stain remover spray in addition to laundry detergent. Do not use bleach or fabric softener because it will affect the finish.

Is there an average number of wears you get out of each pair? Do the barrier/pad materials wear out quickly? Is there a way to ensure that they don't (for a while at least)?

myLACYS™ underwear, including the pad material, are durable and made to last. During the R&D process, we had them lab tested and after 25 washings, the pad actually increased in its absorbency. myLACYS™ should last at least as long as regular underwear and will continue to perform exactly as they were initially intended to.

What styles and colors are available?

myLACYS™ are available in five styles: bikini, boy short, thong, French cut and brief. They come in black, white and natural.

Tell me more about the environmental and financial benefits to choosing these panties over the traditional panty and liner route.

myLACYS™ are a great alternative to panty liners for a number of reasons. First of all, they are a reusable, sustainable product. There’s nothing to throw away so you’re not adding to our landfills. Secondly, there’s the convenience factor. You don’t have to buy panty liners which saves money over time and you don’t have to remember to put them in.

We believe myLACYS™ is beginning a trend as a reusable, sustainable product. The lingerie company onGossamer has just come out with a panty called “the luxury liner.” It is specifically for women who are on their period, to help ensure they don’t stain their clothing. Although myLACYS™ is not specifically intended for this use, there is a definite benefit if the unthinkable happens.
