Interview with Paula Frasier, Designer of
StrapDoctor
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Each day, women all over face the similar problem of bra straps that slip and won't stay on their shoulders. However, it's not only bra straps. This same issue occurs with the spaghetti thin straps of dresses and tops too. Well, Paula Frasier had enough of this and decided to do something about it.
This former full-time farmer and mom to three children created StrapDoctor, a thin piece of fabric that attaches to the inside of any bra strap and keeps it from slipping down. One side has many microscopic hooks that connect to your bra and other side is made from a soft, comfortable non-slip material. StrapDoctor is virtually unnoticeable and is reusable and washable.
Karen Frasier, who lives in rural Prince Edward Island on Canada's east coast, took some time from her busy schedule, which includes growing wild blueberries, to speak with LoveToKnow Lingerie about the StrapDoctor creation.
About StrapDoctor
LTK: When and why did you create StrapDoctor?
PF: "I created StrapDoctor out of my own personal frustration with a slipping bra strap that was annoying the heck out of me. Only after I fixed my own problem did the realization dawn on me that other women had this problem too. I didn't know what I got myself into when I started out. My background is agriculture and people would keep asking if I was a scientist or chemical engineer. No, I just stumbled my way through this although I am entrepreneurial by nature."
LTK: How does it work?
PF: "The reason StrapDoctor works so well is that it is such a simple product. It's simple to use, simple to care for and simple looking. It looks rather like a band-aid and it provides a type of band-aid solution to the problem. It attaches directly underneath the bra strap at the top of the shoulder area and when placed against the skin provides a non-slip action."
LTK: What is it made from? Why did you choose this material?
PF: "The materials were chosen after many many MANY rounds of searching and testing. It is clear in color so that was a definite restriction when sourcing components. The side that attaches to the strap is comprised of microscopic hooks, while the opposite side is a hypoallergenic material that acts to grip against the skin, without any adhesives to leave a nasty residue. I'm a redhead with extremely sensitive skin so I was always the guinea pig for the product testing...and yes many of the early compounds left nasty rashes!"
LTK: What type of feedback have you received from users before and after using this device?
PF: "Women love it...especially since it is so easy to use. It is easy to put on and then it can stay permanently attached to that bra or strap and washed right on the item. Other solutions are either very big and bulky or take a personal valet to get it on or off. It is very rewarding to receive the phone calls, e-mails and letters from women who tell me that I have solved a problem they have endured for years. I mean, isn't that just the neatest thing?! OK, so it's a small thing, not world peace, but hey, I find it rewarding."
LTK: Is this product patented?
PF: "Yes it is."
Buying StrapDoctor
LTK: Can it be found in stores or only online? How much do they cost?
PF: "Currently we are only offering StrapDoctor for sale online, but are working on securing placement in major retailers. The cost is $9.95 for our Twin Pack that includes one pair each of Narrow and Regular widths. We also have a MegaPack that is $14.95, for two pairs each of the Narrow and Regular widths.
LTK: How would you compare this lingerie accessory with others like it on the market?
PF: "Well, of course, I am a little biased but my customers also say the same thing...It's the best! Other options include pads that wrap around the strap, or clasps that pull the straps together behind your back. Both of these work, but are either bulky or very difficult to get on or off. Also, neither of these accessories can be left directly attached to the strap."
LTK: Besides slipping bra straps, what other lingerie accessories are needed to help women with their annoying fashion frustrations?
PF: "Well I'm no expert on that but I have had numerous women tell me they are wearing StrapDoctor on their socks to keep them up! I thought that was funny. I am working on other products to alleviate frustrations but none of them are in the fashion field. I'm always keen to hear from people about their common annoyances that they would like a solution for and then I'll try to invent something to fix it. That's my dream."
