Lanz of Salzburg Nightgowns

From LoveToKnow Lingerie

Despite the name, Lanz of Salzburg nightgowns, sleepwear favorites for over sixty years, originated in America. They are now part of the Eileen West sleepwear collection, but still feature the classic flannels and lovely details that have made them a must for chilly winter nights.

Look of Lanz of Salzburg Nightgowns

Despite only dating to the mid-20th century, Lanz of Salzburg nightgowns look like something Laura Ingalls Wilder might have bedded down in, only with livelier prints. A traditional Lanz nightgown features a Tyrolean-style print in red on white, or royal blue on white. If you like, you can also get pastels, but the brighter prints are the famous style.

They are made out of 100 percent cotton flannel and are very thick and soft. What really makes a Lanz nightgown distinctive is the eyelet lace trimming at the neck, yoke and cuffs. There’s also buttoning on the front to make for easy on and off. These nightgowns will keep you warm and cozy on even the nastiest of nights.

Spring and Summer Gowns

As classic as the flannel gown may be, that’s not all that Lanz has to offer. They are all about the practical, and so have a number of nightgowns available. That includes those designed to keep you cool on a hot, sticky night. You may want to consider one of the calf-length gowns made from crisp 100 percent cotton seersucker, designed to feel cool and airy. The seersucker gown is sleeveless with the classic Lanz eyelet trim comprising straps and decorating the top of the bodice. The bodice also features gently flattering horizontal pintucking and a button-front placket for easy dressing. The gown is lightly gathered down the front and back. It can be washed in the machine, but must be dried on the line.

The classic Tyrolean print is available in a spring gown as well. It is a cotton lawn in white covered with green, blue and yellow blossoms. It is sleeveless with lacy eyelet straps and white scalloped eyelet lace accented with yellow ribbon on the bodices.

The Blue Danube gown is of cotton cambric lawn, full-length and has a sweetheart neckline trimmed in lace. This gown has cap sleeves and is perfect for warm nights.

New Gowns

A new Lanz of Salzburg nightgown, available exclusively through specialty retailer The Vermont Country Store, is delightful for spring. It’s a gossamer sleeveless gown in pure cotton cambric with delicate white flowers and green ribbon design. The lacy straps have interwoven green ribbon and the gown falls to the ankles. You can even get a matching robe.

For those who like to mix and match, Lanz now has a lively set of daisy-print Capri pajamas and matching knee-length gown. They are made of 100 percent pima cotton jersey and are white with purple, yellow and orange gerbera daisies. The gown is trimmed with the classic Lanz lace and has smocking on the bodice, shoulder straps and a button placket.

Buying Lanz Gowns

Lanz of Salzburg sleepwear is available at a range of brick-and-mortar and online stores. While they do have a special relationship with the Vermont Country Store, you can also find them on Amazon, at the Sierra Trading Post, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and Nordstrom.

Because the design has changed so little, you may not need to search for vintage nightgowns. If there is a particular print you remember, however, many sellers offer Lanz nightgowns on eBay. You can also contact the site directly and ask about the print or cut. If they don’t have information on where it can be found, they may tell you if it will be made available again.

In a Lanz nightgown, you are virtually guaranteed a cozy night!
