While giving lingerie as a gift won't work for everyone, it doesn't necessarily have to be limited to you spouse or significant other. Sisters and best friends often give one another gifts of pretty or expensive lingerie they wouldn't normally buy for themselves. The maid of honor and/or bridesmaids often give a special wedding night negligee, teddy, or baby doll or camisole and panty set to the bride-to-be for her wedding night. When giving unmentionables to someone other than your spouse or sweetheart, make sure both the occasion and the relationship is appropriate. While a mother and daughter who are close may give lingerie as a gift to one another, it probably isn't quite as fitting to give to your mother-in-law, unless it is something along the lines of a modest nightgown. • Sizing: Make sure you have the right sizes for whomever you are giving the lingerie to. For men's gifts, this often means just knowing whether your guy needs a small, medium, or large. For women, you may need to know bra cup size, bust measurement, and underwear and dress sizes, depending on the type of underthings you are purchasing.

• Styles: Another consideration is if the style is something the recipient will like. For example, women who are short-waisted may prefer mid-to low rise undies, while average or tall women can wear standard bikinis with no problem.

• Purpose: If the purpose of your gift if functional underwear for the recipient, your purchase will probably be quite different than if it is to enhance the romance of your anniversary night. If you are going for Eros, sometimes buying something racy or different than your dearest would normally wear might be just the thing. If you give lingerie to your significant other, keep in mind the gift is for them, not you.

• Quality: Most department stores offer a wide range of affordable lingerie, or you can purchase it from specialty or internet retailers. It's often better to pay a little more for quality lingerie.

Receipts, Return Policies, and Gift Certificates

Ask about the return policy when you are purchasing your gift of lingerie in case it turns out to be the wrong size or doesn't work out. If they will accept returns, make sure you save the receipt.

Some stores don't accept returns on intimate apparel at all. In this case, you may want to consider giving a gift certificate.
