Boxers have been in existence since 1944. They were originally called boxer shorts, which was an accurate description of the elastic band shorts worn by professional boxers in the day.
The popularity of men's boxers took flight in 1985 when English model and musician Nick Kamen appeared in a Levi’s jeans ad wearing only a pair of white boxers.
Today’s Boxers
In the past. it was common to see boxers with the front closed. These front closures were either made with snaps or buttons. Today, most boxers have no front closure and come in a dizzying array of colors and styles.

Why Men Prefer Boxers
In the mid 1980s, the debate on boxers vs. briefs seemed to be every bit as contentious as the Coca Cola vs. Pepsi debate. Even superstar and athlete Michael Jordan got into the mix with his very popular Hanes television commercial ads. As with the Coke vs. Pepsi argument, wearers of boxers and briefs have firm reasons for their stances. Some of them are:
- The comfort factor -- many claim that men's boxers are just more comfortable than briefs.
- Variety -- Although briefs come in different colors, boxers still has the advantage. Not only are there a plethora of shades to choose from on the market, but there are patterns galore to suit your every need.
- Medical reasons -- There is evidence that briefs increase the temperature of the delicate groin area, and because of this, may impact a man’s sperm count. Boxers, on the other hand, allow air to flow more smoothly through that region and helps to maintain the body's temperature and sperm count.
- Women prefer boxers -- Well, at least it seems that way. In fact, many women do seem to regard mens boxers as more sexy and appealing than briefs.
Why Are They So Popular?
At this point you may be asking yourself why the pendulum has swung so drastically in recent years toward the side of boxers? There appears to be several reasons for this fairly recent development.:
- Men's boxers enjoy more publicity -- Survey today’s print magazines or surf through some of televisions most popular shows, and you’ll find there are more men wearing boxers than briefs. When you do find a man in a pair of briefs, it’s more likely that he’s the “geek” of the show.
- Male models make boxers look sexy -- It’s become very normal to see models advertising underwear in, well, their underwear, than it has been in decades past, and these models tend to be wearing boxers. Couple that with a bevy of slinky beauties draped over their shoulders and it’s easy to see why boxers have become so popular.
- The younger crowd prefers them -- At first blush, it may be difficult to understand why this fact would be such an influence, but 18- to 34-year-olds have a lot of purchasing power and that tends to drive the fashion market.
