Plus Size Models

What Are Plus Size Models Made Of?

Plus size models are made of--obviously--sexy curves! They've got the confidence to embrace their bodies in a world of stick figures, and show us it's hot to look womanly--in lingerie or all covered up. Plus size models can range from size 8 to size 32, but have the same height requirements as most other models--five-foot-eight to six feet tall. Generally, you need to be at least a size 12 to qualify as "plus." Though larger in size, the models still need to be proportional and carry their weight well. And of course their skin, smile and facial structure have to be gorgeous as well.

Famous Faces of Voluptuous Models

Queen Latifah

Barbara Brickner: She does quite a bit of work outside of the United States and has clients everywhere from Italy to Canada.

Emme Aronson: She's known as the first plus size supermodel. She's a size 12 and stays in shape thanks to yoga, cardio, and cross-country skiing. What got the attention of agents was her glowing, healthy look.

Queen Latifah: A face of Cover Girl, Queen Latifah is a beautiful curvy goddess, and proud of it! She exudes confidence and grace. Her success doesn't stop at modeling; she's been in movies like Last Holiday and Beauty Shop.

Christina Schmidt: She's a beautiful girl who was born in Canada in 1987. One of the faces of Torrid, she's inspiring teenage girls to accept themselves the way they are--and love every pound. In fact, here is an interview with her on her new client, Torrid.com's, website.

Work It, Girl!

Want to get your own face in magazines or on television? Here are some tips on getting started:

  • Beware of scams! Any agency that asks for money is probably a scam. You will have to have photos taken and comp cards made, but often the legitimate agencies will either front you the money, or at least give you the option to go wherever you'd like to have the work done (as opposed to forcing you to use their photographer, for example).
  • Visit a few agencies or mail in your pictures (by mail or email) and don't be afraid of rejection. Tyra Banks was turned down by four modeling agencies before the fifth one signed her. Look where she is now. Every agency doesn't have the same look in mind that they're going for; don't stop until you find the one for you.
  • Be healthy! Plus size models may not be rail-thin, but they still need to maintain a healthy diet and an exercise regimen. To have beautiful skin--a usual modeling requirement--you've got to give your body the nourishment it needs. Drink plenty of water and eat your veggies!
  • When you do meet with an agency, don't go in looking ready for the prom! Pull your hair back, put on just a bit of makeup (natural beauty is best) and wear a simple outfit that accents your body's shape.
