Revealing Stocking Tops

From LoveToKnow Lingerie

No matter how daring clothing becomes, the simple act of revealing stocking tops will always have its own particular sexual appeal. Whether as part of a costume or a nighttime outfit, it still smacks of thrill and excitement.

Showing off stocking tops is a specific fashion choice.

Revealing Stocking Tops in History

Until the 1920s, the only women who dared show their stockings, much less the tops, were those who worked in burlesque. Stockings were not even something to be discussed. However, any slightly risqué drawing or photo tended to feature a woman adjusting her stockings – nothing was sexier.

When skirts became shorter in the 1920s, stockings were visible for the first time. The tops, however, were only seen in flashes when doing exuberant dances like the Charleston. The idea of the flapper with skirts above the knee and stockings rolled down was really only part of the popular culture from 1926 to 1928 – stocking tops were mostly always hidden.

It was in pin-up pictures, particularly the Vargas prints of the 1940s and 50s, that the daintily naughty showing of stocking tops began to permeate more of the culture. The pictures were still relegated to certain sorts of magazines, but more and more men could easily procure such pictures.

Showing Stockings as Fashion

Once stockings stopped being a part of women's standard underwear, stockings and garters then became fetish and fantasy objects. Revealing stocking tops as part of an outfit is a choice not to be made lightly, because it will always be seen as an overt sexual statement.

One way to show off some thigh without it being viewed as quite so risqué is to choose over-the-knee socks, rather than actual stockings. You can wear these with mini-skirts and shorts and while it's a sexy look, it's also fun and kicky. The sexiness can be dialed back slightly by wearing contrasting tights under the socks.

Generally speaking, it's only women in the music industry who can seriously get away with wearing short skirts that show off garter belts and stockings. They are putting forth a specific image and style.

For most women, what works best with wanting to show a hint of thigh is to wear a skirt that falls just above the knee. This way, you can flash some stocking top when you cross your legs. If you're going dancing, you may want a skirt with a lot of flow, so you can really show off those legs.

Choose Your Setting

While revealing stocking tops no longer has to be a strictly private affair, you should still be mindful of when and where you choose to flaunt your lingerie. Even in an informal office space, it isn't appropriate.

Likewise, at an evening event, you want to pick and choose your circumstance. When clubbing, you can wear whatever you like and feel good in. But if you're going to a formal event, you might want to use more discretion. Some women will wear a long dress with a slit up the leg and this can be perfect for showing off ornate stockings. It will still be considered tacky by many, but if it's what you choose to do and you wear it with pride, it's something you own.

A retro event, especially swing dancing, is the perfect circumstance to wear a dress that will show off seamed stockings. While most women in the 1940s wore tap pants or something similar under their dresses to prevent stocking tops from being revealed, these days a woman doesn’t have to worry that she'll forever ruin a good reputation just by showing off a bit of sexiness on the dance floor.

Show Off in Style

Finally, if you are going to make a point of showing off your stockings, go all out and buy beautiful, detailed stockings! You can get thigh highs or silk stockings with lacy tops studded with rhinestones or any number of decorations. They can be a part of a very sexy outfit, with a dash of glamour as well.
