Satin Slips
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Satin slips can give you just the right amount of opacity under a see-through dress or skirt. They also protect your skin from itchy fabric, acting as a barrier between your skin and the irritant. They're available in full-length as well as half-lengths. They're easy to find, too, and can be purchased online or in major department stores.
Satin Slips in History
Satin slips don't seem to be as popular as they were in the past. Back in the Roaring 20s and 1930s, they were a staple in women's closets. For a vintage slip, try Silver Screen Loungerie. You'll find some of the prettiest, most feminine pieces there. You'll pay a pretty penny for something like a 1930s Gold Charmeuse Silk Slip, but if you're into vintage clothing and love lingerie, it's worth the splurge. Other styles include the 1940s Fischer Vintage, 194's Heavenly Fischer, and more. Not all styles on the site are made of silk, so read the descriptions carefully.
Not Just Underclothes
You can wear a satin slip in the bedroom for your lover—or just to make yourself feel sexy if you're spending the night alone with jazz music, wine and a good book. Satin against your skin is a great way to pamper yourself. Unless you're going for vintage pieces like those listed above, you won't necessarily have to shell out a ton of money to feel luxurious.
Find a sturdy, sexy slip with lace or ribbon detail to enhance your femininity and make your lover beg you to hold your body against him. Use it as a nightgown; use it as regular lingerie. They're not just for keeping innocent onlookers from seeing all the lines and curves of your silhouette.
How to Wear Them
If you're wearing your satin slip with the intention of undressing in front of your lover, you need to know how to wear it for the greatest impact. First, slip on some thigh high stockings. They go great with almost any kind of lingerie. If you want to make him drool even more, you'll add a garter belt to the mix. There's something seductively dangerous about satin, thigh highs and garter belts.
Find Your Slips
Here are a few non-vintage slips to choose from if you want a more modern twist (and if you want to take it easier on your wallet):
- Victoria's Secret's Satin Ballet Length Slip has lace and shirred cups for an ultra-feminine look. Choose from pink, magenta, blue pearl, lavender, ivory and black.
- Victoria's Secret's Low-Back Satin Slip is another scintillating option. Choose from lavender, ice pink, black, blue mist and flash red.
- Victoria's Secret's Lace-Up Satin Slip is inspired by corsets. Choose from black, navy, raisin and red.
- American Intimates has a practical half-slip to go under all your favorite slightly sheer skirts.
- Fig Leaves has another half-slip from Hanky Panky. It's feminine, functional, and costs $65.
A Benefit to Satin Under Clothing
Since satin's slippery, your skirt or dress will shimmy and slide right over it as you move. In most cases, it won't ride up and get stuck there as it would with some other materials. So when you're wearing your favorite slinky getup, you won't have to worry about whether it's moving with you or holding you back.
If your dress or skirt is scratchy on your skin, as in the case of wool, you can also try satin slips to create a barrier. Keep warm (if the outfit is wool, for example), but don’t stay uncomfortable and itchy. Don a satin slip. That way, you up the sex appeal (when you remove the work clothes at the end of the day), keep yourself from scratching too much, and overall just experience more comfort.
Whether you're looking for something practical or whimsical, strictly functional or girlish, there's a satin slip out there for you. Half-slips are generally made to be more functional and plain. The full-length slips are often treated like nighties and come in a wider range of colors and detailing.
