Silicone Bra Straps

From LoveToKnow Lingerie

As great as clear bra straps are for offering full and comfortable support under camisoles or wide-cut tops, silicone bra straps are what you want to look for, rather than plastic. For most women, silicone is better for the skin, and since you’re usually needing them for lightweight clothes being worn in hot weather, whatever keeps your skin breathing properly is ideal.

The Look of Silicone Bra Straps

No bra strap is going to be completely invisible, sad to say. In as much as designers herald their straps as being indiscernible to the average viewer, they have a distinct sheen and nothing can be done about that. However, as clear straps go, silicone bra straps are definitely less immediately noticeable. They are mostly matte, so that the extent to which they reflect light is considerably less than a plastic strap. If you are trying on a bra and the label isn’t straightforward about whether the strap is plastic or silicone, move around under the light in the dressing room until you have seen the strap from all angles. This will inform you as to its visibility. The more visible it is under light, the more likely it’s plastic.

Plastic vs. Silicone

Since the bra strap covers so little skin, you might wonder why you should bother looking for silicone, rather than plastic, particularly since silicone can be more expensive. The simple answer is that silicone is stronger, lasts longer and is better for your skin. All but a few women can wear silicone comfortably, whereas you want to avoid having plastic against your skin. It does not breathe and can make you sweat and chafe. You can even develop a rash or other skin problems. It’s infinitely better to spend more money on something quality that won’t compromise your skin’s comfort for fashion.

Silicone vs. Strapless

Many women might also wonder why anyone would opt for silicone bra straps at all, when a top or dress that will show an ordinary bra strap can be worn with a strapless bra. And since there are such varieties available, like low back strapless bras, or halter neck bras, or bras whose straps can be converted to any of the above, it might seem silly to opt for a regular bra that has straps that will show, no matter how nearly invisible they are. The answer for most women is, overwhelmingly, comfort. While a strapless bra is fine for an evening, it’s not something you want to wear all day, especially in hot weather. Furthermore, many strapless bras do not offer the same support or cleavage-enhancing effect as a bra with adjustable straps, and if you are wearing something daring, you want to push it to the limit. Finally, if you are dancing or otherwise being active, you may want to wear something that isn’t just more comfortable but will allow you maximum movement, which items like long-line bras might not.

Caring for Silicone Straps

Silicone straps should be removable. If you find a bra with clear straps that can’t be removed, leave it on the hanger. In order for the straps to last, they need special care. You should wash them after every use and do so separately of the bra itself. Most silicone straps emphasize that they can only be washed with water and no soap of any kind. If this is unsatisfactory, you can wipe them with plain white vinegar or a light touch of castile soap. Lay them on a towel to dry. You should be able to make good use of them for several seasons.
