Vanity Fair Nightgowns
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Whether vintage or brand-new, Vanity Fair nightgowns are desirable sleepwear that make bedtime a special occasion. The company prides itself on making night clothes that fit well, look beautiful and provide perfect comfort.
History of Vanity Fair Nightgowns
The company, which earned its name via an employee contest, has been making nightwear since 1899. While many lingerie manufacturers were forced by rationing to abandon silk during World War II, Vanity Fair nightgowns only stopped being made in silk in 1948. The company was one of the major developers of the silky nylon tricot that still is used to make their nightgowns. With innovations such as animal prints (these were new and wild in the 1950s) and an emphasis on beautiful design, it's no wonder Vanity Fair is still a name to remember.
Modern Nightgowns
Vanity Fair is not the major name in nightgowns as it once was, although its sleepwear is certainly still valued by those who buy it.
The very popular Coloratura short gown is a silky V-neck knee-length gown made of nylon tricot. It fits loosely and features floral embroidery on the yoke. It comes in a wide range of colors and several plus sizes so everyone can have one. Wearers rave about its look, comfort and the ease of care.
Although Vanity Fair is still making pajamas and robes, it doesn't seem to be making as many nightgowns as it used to. However, the vintage gowns are in continuous demand.
Vintage Nightgowns
Some people are very uncomfortable about the idea of vintage sleepwear. While wearing clothes once worn by someone else might be one thing, sleeping in something second-hand can feel dirty, even if the item has been washed. But for those who know that once the item is cleaned it's as good as new, a vintage nightgown can be a wonderful treat. This is especially true if it's made of real silk, but even a nylon nightie is lovely. Many vintage night dresses have a more feminine design than modern gowns, which makes them even more desirable for romantic evenings and bridal lingerie.
Vanity Fair's nightgown selection is famous for having some of the most elegant and romantic nightgowns designed. Many of the vintage gowns were designed with gently fitted bodices, defined waists and full, sweeping skirts. A woman could feel like Ginger Rogers dancing on the clouds in such a nightgown. Trimmed with lace, chiffon or satin ribbons, a nightgown might be the most glamorous item in a woman's closet. And unlike a ball gown, it was something she could wear every night.
It's no wonder vintage Vanity Fair nightgowns are still so prized. The nylon tricot is virtually indestructible, so if you find a nightgown you like, it's yours for life.
Shopping for Vintage Nightgowns
Although most vintage shops will have a lingerie section, if your heart is set on a Vanity Fair nightgown, you are best off shopping online at specialty retailers. Many online shops carry only lingerie and sleepwear, so they will have an excellent selection and also be able to assist you with any requests. If there is a particular print or cut for which you are looking, they can take your information and contact you when such a piece comes in.
Obviously, you'll have the most luck if you browse with an open mind. Choices and prices will vary widely, with the rarest nightgowns being quite expensive but many lovely items being very reasonable. You should expect that anything from the 1940s will be at least three figures, but if you've seen any of those nightgowns, you'll know they are worth it.
Some good vintage nightgown sellers include:
And of course there are many others. Good luck!
