Victoria’s Secret began in the mid 1970’s by entrepreneur Roy Raymond. His idea was to make the lingerie shopping experience less uncomfortable for men and women. The first store was opened in San Francisco and decorated like an elaborate Victorian bedroom. This friendly, classy environment was vastly different than other lingerie stores at the time. After the first year, the company grossed a little over a half million dollars, which was used to establish four new locations. In the 80’s, Victoria’s Secret was sold to The Limited, who kept the personalized classy image and expanded their merchandise to include shoes, evening wear and perfumes. In the 90’s the innovative use of supermodels in advertising and fashion shows helped gain the company’s popularity with the general public Today, Victoria’s Secret is still one of the most successful lingerie chains available to the consumer and offers it’s own line of lotions, makeup and accessories.
