Vinyl Corsets

From LoveToKnow Lingerie

Corsets aren't just for historical figures anymore, and vinyl's not just for bad girls and records; find out why vinyl corsets may be just what you're looking for to update your style.

Vinyl corsets can be incredibly sexy.

What Vinyl Corsets Say About You

Vinyl corsets are undeniably sexy. Corsets are risque; vinyl is hot. Put the two together and you'll have to watch your step because jaws will drop and tongues will hang from everyone's mouths. Wouldn't want to step on anybody in your matching stiletto boots, now would you?

If you choose to wear a vinyl corset, you're going to be telling the world that you're edgy, hip and ready for a good time. If you just want to sit in the corner booth and read your book, don't wear a corset that day. All eyes will be on you. You're a trendsetter. You're a man-magnet. Be ready to strut your stuff.

Even if you cover up your corset with a sweater, don't be surprised if all eyes are still on you. What vinyl and sexy lingerie do to a woman even when they're covered up is obvious—they make her walk taller, smile wider and exude more confidence than usual.

Corset Warnings and Downsides to Vinyl

Corsets are more comfortable today than in the past. They used to be used to morph ladies' waistlines into sizes they weren't meant to be, which resulted in health issues such as organ problems, deformities, the inability to bear children and a loss of muscle strength. Make sure you don't choose a corset that's too tight—make it all about fashion and sex appeal rather than body re-sculpting—and you should be fine.

The downside to vinyl is that it doesn’t allow your skin to breathe like lace and cotton lingerie. You'll probably sweat more and be pretty darn hot on a summer afternoon if you choose to wear one of your vinyl corsets that day.

How to Wear Them

You can wear a vinyl corset as innerwear or outerwear. That all depends upon what you're wearing it with, where you're going and how comfortable you are drawing stares your way.

Do Wear Them With

Vinyl corsets do look great with:

  • Jeans
  • Black pants
  • Pencil skirts
  • Long, flowy skirts
  • Sexy boots (with pants)
  • Ballet flats (to take a hard look down a notch)
  • Whatever you like, as long as it's used as innerwear and all the bumps and bulges are covered

Of course if you're wearing your corset under something and it will be completely hidden, you can wear it anywhere, and at any time you want. It's when you choose to wear it on the outside that dos and don'ts come into play. To look trendy and not trashy, keep your vinyl corsets as the one "wild" piece you wear, and try to choose other classic or even feminine pieces for your ensemble.

Don't Try

Don't bother wearing vinyl corsets with:

  • Matching tight vinyl pants
  • Minis
  • Balloon skirts
  • Military-style boots
  • Cheap flip-flops

Showing too much skin is always a bad idea. Ever hear the golden rule of wearing a mini or a revealing shirt? Don't do both at the same time. Choose a mini OR a top that shows a lot of skin/cleavage. You also want the other pieces you choose to go with the corset to pull your look together; not look like a thrift store exploded on your body. That's why flip-flops and balloon skirts should stay at home when the edgy corsets come out to play.

Military boots are a bad idea because of their clunky, harsh look. Vinyl pants are similar in that they are edgy as well, and the vinyl lingerie look is all about balance—not looking intimidating.

Use Common Sense on the Where

Unless you have a very "special" type of job, you're not going to want to wear your vinyl corset as outerwear to work. Nope, you're not going to want to wear it to school either, especially if there's any kind of dress code in place. Chances are, vinyl corsets will get you sent home to change.

Where you can wear them, though, is out clubbing or to a bar. If you live in an urban area, you can probably get away with just wearing one on the street on the weekend. No one will even look at you funny if you pair it with modest pants and maybe even a sweater or jacket. Wearing vinyl corsets as outerwear, however, is usually best left for after dark, no matter where you live or where you're going (unless you're going to a biker bar in a city for a fabulous hamburger and beer lunch).

One more thing to take into consideration is the style of the actual corset. Some show more skin than others. Some boost cleavage to nearly inappropriate levels for the public eye. Use your judgment. Here are a few examples; see if you can pick out the ones suitable for outerwear:
