If you've had a breast surgically removed and want to save some money on your post-surgical lingerie, wholesale mastectomy bras may be for you.
About Mastectomy Bras
Mastectomy bras, also known as post-mastectomy bras, are used by women who have had one or both breasts surgically removed because they either have breast cancer or are at a very high risk of developing it. The surgery involves removing either part or all of the breast. During a healing period, which normally can last up to two months, most women will usually wear a thin camisole or tank top designed with a non-weighted breast prosthesis. After that time, they will be fit for a weighted external breast prosthesis or breast form.
A prosthesis is an artificial breast designed to feel and look like a real breast under clothing and lingerie. It is made from silicone gel, fiberfill, foam or other substances that feel like natural tissue. Women can be fitted for a breast form and a mastectomy bra at the same time at a specialty lingerie shop or boutique. Breast forms can either be worn inside of a mastectomy bra or be adhered to your skin. Depending on your comfort level, one can be just as good as the other. However, before you go shopping for the prosthesis and bra, check with your health care professional to determine if one or both of these items can be covered through your medical insurance.
However, you want to find a bra with which you are comfortable not only wearing, but taking on and off every day. Because of the physical difficulties some women may face after surgery, bra manufacturers have designed a variety of post-surgical bra styles including:
- Underwire
- Full-figured
- Softcup
- Seamless
- Front closure only
- Stretch cotton leisure
- Combined front and back closures
- Back closure only
Benefits to Wearing a Mastectomy Bra
Wearing a mastectomy bra with a prosthesis can be a difficult adjustment in a woman's life, but there are many benefits:
- When worn with a properly fitted prosthesis, it can help balance the body, giving it a more natural look, and hold your bra in place.
- Can prevent your shoulders from drooping, poor posture, backaches and spinal curvature.
- You won't have to worry about your breast form slipping or coming loose.
- Increase your self-confidence about your appearance.
- Your clothes will fit better.
- You don't have to go through the surgery and recovery of reconstructive breast surgery.
- Nowadays, mastectomy bras come in various sizes, colors and styles, and look similar to any other type of bra.

A Final Thought: Bra Sizing
Once you have breast surgery, your bra size will change. It doesn't matter if you've had a simple, modified radical or radical mastectomy on one or both of your breasts. You will need to be measured for a new bra size. And while this may be overwhelming, horrific or both, take your time and shop around. And bring along a friend or loved to help take this step on the emotional journey you are following.
