Women's Panties
From LoveToKnow Lingerie
Step into a lingerie store and you will see thousands of women's panties. You may feel a little overwhelmed by the different styles, fabric and embellishments. You may want to choose a pair to match one of your bras, or you may need them for a specific occasion. And you may be wondering what kind of panties prevent the infamous visible panty line.
Bikini Cut Women’s Panties
One of the most popular styles for women's panties is the bikini cut, which usually have a rear, and are cut high at the thigh. They are often designed as low-rise to go with the popular low-rise pant trend. Some bikini styles are made with string at the sides, while others have more fabric. Bikini cut panties can come in any fabric.
Thongs
Thongs are usually dreaded by women who have not tried them. They look obscenely uncomfortable, but if made well, are usually not. There are different kinds of thongs, but generally they do not have a rear. Thongs are found in many fabrics and have lots of sexy styles. They're also sold in baby doll or lingerie sets. Thong panties are a perfect solution to the dreaded panty line and are good for wearing skirts or tight pants.
There is a drawback to thongs though. Some researchers feel that they increase the incidence for yeast infections since the fabric rides is close to the perineum. Cotton thongs may help prevent this problem.
Kinds of thongs include:
- G-string thongs are made almost entirely of string. They provide almost no coverage or support and are usually regarded as the least comfortable.
- T-string thongs form a perfect T in the back. These thongs are often embellished and are a little more comfortable than g-strings.
- Rio thongs go up on the sides rather than straight across. Rio thongs tend to be the most popular and more comfortable than other thong styles.
Boy Shorts/Hipster
Boy shorts have appeared in the lingerie scene very recently. Many women prefer them to any other women’s panties. Boy shorts have a full rear and a sporty look. They look like short, tight shorts and were designed to prevent being shown if worn beneath low rise pants and skirts. Many women choose boy shorts for athletic activities. If made out of a light fabric, there is little chance for a visible panty line, though you may wish to check if wearing a tight pair of pants or skirt.
High Rise/Granny Panties
High rise or granny panties provide a great deal of coverage and are probably the most comfortable. High rise panties are cut at the thigh, have full rears and often hit at the belly button or higher. These panties should never be worn by anyone wishing to avoid a visible panty line or when wearing low-rise pants. Granny panties are a popular choice for women while sleeping or during their menstrual cycle.
Fabrics
Women’s panties come in a variety of fabric choices. If you are prone to yeast infections, you may want to stay away from Lycra and silk/satin choices.
Cotton
Cotton is, of course, the best choice for panties for health reasons. Cotton panties are often cheap, tend to last for a while and are comfortable. They can be tossed in the washing machine and dryer with little worry. Cotton is the best fabric choice for athletic activities. Many retailers now dress up cotton panties with colors, patterns and even ribbons and lace.
Silk/Satin
Silk and satin are popular choices for women who want a more expensive, and sexy look. Silk and satin panties may need to be hand-washed so they are not recommended for use during your menstrual cycle. Some silk and satin panties are heavily embellished with lace, and may show through your clothing.
Lycra
Lycra is a popular fabric choice for panties now. Lycra is often used in panties since it provides a stretch, may help prevent visible panty line and provide seamless support. In panties, Lycra is often combined with cotton and/or nylon.

-- Contributed by: jackieanncdI have always prefered to match my panties to my skirts, some colors can be a bit of a challenge but with a very high hemline its worth the effort. After all when your going up the stairs where are all eyes going?
